Making a galaxy background doesn't have to be super complicated. There are so many way to approach this task. Here’s how I did it. To recreate these two cards all you need is watercolor paper, and aqua painter and a couple of ink refills.
I made two backgrounds when I was playing around and so I ended up making two cards. Which one do you like better? I can’t decide.
I used Night of Navy, Rich Razzleberry and Bermuda Bay ink refills to create the space look. First I wet the watercolor paper entirely. Then I set to quick work. I applied ink with an aqua painter, starting with the lightest color and ending with the darkest color. I placed the color randomly and let each color bleed into the other. The effect is totally unique and different each time you try it.
After the watercolor background dried I splattered a little white paint (all I had on hand was a tube of white acrylic craft paint) to add in some stars. I used the aqua painter. The splatter technique is basically dip in paint and flick across your paper (and your entire desk if you are not careful). The larger paper stars were punched using the Little Twinkle punch. I added a few rhinestone gems for extra twinkle.
On one card the Happy Birthday was stamped and embossed before the paint was laid down. Once the other I stamped and embossed the Happy Birthday sentiment after. Can you tell which is which? The vertical card the embossing was done after the paint and I think the white is a little it brighter. The horizontal card the embossing was put down first and then I painted over it. While I was able to wipe the ink off of the sentiment I think it appears a little more dull. Note: I find embossing on watercolor paper a little hard to get solid and even coverage because of the paper texture. Do you have any tips? I’d love to know. Sometimes I stamp and emboss twice but I didn't do that here letting the speckle of the background appear through the letters to add to that galaxy effect.
